Setting/magic | TV Series info | Lina's wiki
Personality:
Lina, in all aspects, is a short-tempered girl who has a tendency to look out for herself first and others second. The short-temper may perhaps come from always being in shadow of her older sister or it may just be the way she is. But what started it doesn't matter. What everyone in Lost Universe knows is: you do not make Lina Inverse angry. She'll fight over just about anything if given a reason to, she's more than a little selfish and won't hesitate to take treasure or food for any reason she can think of. Have I mentioned she's greedy? Because she is. Which feeds into that whole selfish thing.
But all of that isn't to say she doesn't think about other people. When push comes to shove, Lina will look out for her friends and won't think twice about risking her life if it means theirs. She refuses to die, but that's just her stubbornness kicking in. She has no problem saving the world because she kind of enjoys living in it. There are still things she wants to do. She's cocky from time to time and tends to push her weight around on other people unless it has some kind of financial gain for her.
One of the biggest things about Lina is her intelligence. She became a full-fledged, acknowledged and titled sorceress before the age of 13. That's kind of a big deal. She has an extensive knowledge of all kinds of magic and spells as well as artifacts and gods/demons/lords. She often uses these in a futile attempt to educate Gourry. Not only does she have book smarts, but she's a master businesswoman thanks to her parents, making her a formidable enemy in the world of magic trades. Lina is also eager to learn things. When something comes up that she doesn't know or understand, she wants to know about it. She doesn't really like the idea of not knowing something that could potentially aid/kill her. Her magical capacity is astounding, allowing her to cast some pretty epic spells (Giga Slave and Ragna Blade) without much trouble (until Martina sealed her powers in NEXT). Hell, her body can handle it enough that the Lord of Nightmares, the mother of all Demon Lords, took control of her body when she lost control of the Giga Slave. Lina's just that good.
Lina's very stubborn and refuses to give up; even if it looks like she is, she's really backing down for a while so she can think of another way to get what she wants. She's very tactical and can think on her feet. This is particularly useful in battles where she can figure out an enemy's weakness and find the best solution to destroy them, often combining different magical elements and artifacts. But it's her stubbornness and insistance on living that keeps pushing her group to keep going. She has this little thing about finding the bright side of situations, finding the way out of problems, that lets her be positive even in the worst circumstances.
One of her downsides is, sadly, her temper. Xellos often uses it to his advantage to get what he wants from her. The temper can also cause problems in other ways, such as getting angry enough to destroy towns when she doesn't exactly mean to. Though, perhaps what's worse than the temper are the triggers: even the slightest push of the wrong button can set Lina going in a tyrade. Another reason her temper is a problem is that when she gets all riled up, she doesn't always see what's going on around her.
Despite all her greediness and selfish ambitions, Lina doesn't like innocent people being threatened. She doesn't like bystanders being caught in things they can't control, things they have no say in. She never wants to hurt someone if she doesn't have to, particularly children and those that can't defend themselves. She wants the world safe and she'll do anything to protect lives when the end of the world is in front of her. She's terrified of endangering lives with her own mistakes; her ultimate conflict throughout NEXT was whether or not she would choose to cast her most powerful spell knowing it could easily (so, so easily) backfire and destroy the world. (She ultimately decides to cast the spell to save Gourry so technically her heart does win out but y'know)
Other than that, Lina Inverse doesn't seem to be afraid of much of anything. A few specific things (oh god slugs get them away). But she'll face down a bandit, a dragon, or a twenty-story tall Monster God and do it with a smile.
